The chapter summarizes our present knowledge of the seaweed resources of the Indian Ocean region with regard to the phytogeographical distribution, composition, biomass, utilization, cultivation, conservation and management. The voluminous data available from Indian Ocean region needs to be reviewed to identify the gaps in our understanding. Use of common standard survey methodology, exploration of virgin intertidal and subtidal areas and uninterrupted supply of seaweed raw material to the industries are some of the points highlighted and discussed. Emphases have also been laid on application of new and modern biotechnological methodologies to ensure proper utilization, conservation, management and sustainable development of the ecologically and economically important seaweed resources of the Indian Ocean region.
