dc.description.abstractThis chapter presents an overview of the contamination of the coastal ecosystem of the North Sea, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, East China Sea, Atlantic Sea, Aegean Sea, East Java Sea, Australian coast and the Mediterranean Sea due to riverine input of various chlorinated hydrocarbons. It deals with an in-depth analysis of pollution of the coastal ecosystem around the Netherlands, U.K. and Germany due to inputs of contaminants from the rivers namely, Elbe, Weser, Ems Ijssel, Rhine, Meuse, Scheldt, Thames, Humber. It also describes how the rivers along the west of India such as Saraswati, Purna, Ambika, Savitri, Terekhol, Zuari, Kali, Gurupur, Netravati, Valapatnam, Beypore, Ponnani contaminate the coastal ecosystem with various persistent organochlorine compounds. It clearly illustrates the contribution of different rivers such as Hooghly, Mahanadi, Devi, Rashikulya, Banshodhara, Nagavali, Godavari, Krishna, Penner and Palar towards coastal pollution along the east coast of India. Besides, it explains the correlation between the percent of riverine input of DDTs, HCHs and PCBs with respect to total load of contaminants in different coastal water. It indicates that the significant riverine input of contaminants in the coastal ecosystem of the Mediterranean Sea comes from Ebro, Turia, Jucar, Ter, Llobregat Mijares, Rhine and Nile along the coast of Spain, France, and Egypt
