Neutral carbohydrates were determined as alditol acetates by capillary gas chromatography in the hydrolysates of suspended particulate samples (40) collected from 8 depths (approx 1 to 1,000 m) at 5 stations of the Bay of Bengal. Eight individual sugars viz. rhamnose, fucose, ribose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, galactose and glucose were identified in the hydrolysates of suspended particulate samples. Amongst these, glucose, mannose and galactose were the most abundant monosaccharides. Rhamnose, fucose, ribose, arabinose and xylose showed large variations and were generally abundant at greater depths ( 100 m). Glucose contribution to the total carbohydrates, especially at higher depths ( 100 m) was relatively less than that reported from other areas
