dc.description.abstractThe physical aspects influencing the different stages of behaviour of the marine fish can be divided into two categories (1) the physical properties of the ocean like temperature, salinity, oxygen, high penetration etc.; and (2) the physical processes like upwelling, currents, oceanic fronts, winds, eddies, etc. Some of the important physical properties processes and their relation to fish abundance are described. A knowledge of the dimensions of the mixed layer, the long term variations of temperature etc. are essential for the prediction of fishery. Tracing of the oxygen minimum layer helps in the fisheries prediction. The coastal upwelling is also another important factor in promoting primary production and subsequent fish abundance. Ocean currents become important in the fishery as the distribution, concentration, depletion, etc., of the fish eggs and larvae are mostly dependent on them. A knowledge of the breeding season and place along with the seasonal winds enables to predict the survival rate, transport, etc., fish. Oceanic fronts are regions of high productivity and the fishes orient themselves in this region.
