The Maritime Archaeological studies in India were initiated in Okhamandal region and Dwarka and Bet Dwarka were the prime sites for the early investigations. The region remained for focal point of the study for almost over two decades. Interestingly, the region harbours the oldest settlement at Nageshwar dating back to the Harappan period, followed by Bet Dwarka to the late Harappan and then several sites of the historical and medieval period including Dwarka in Okhamandal region. The maritime activities were the main attraction of the early settlers and even today spiritual and maritime activities are the major events in the region. Based on findings from the Okha Mandal area (stone anchors, pottery, worked shells, amphorae seal, fishhook) we are able to confirm that Okha mandal was a well established industrial place with a flourishing harbour at Bet Dwarka which was having international contacts and must have played critical role in developing the region with the maritime connection.
