Unlike the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean, the northern Indian Ocean is geographically unique. The bounding to the north by the Asian landmass has a profound impact on the biogeochemistry of the region. The Arabian Sea houses one of the most intense oxygen minimum zones of the World. The elevated anthropogenic loading from the hugely populated littoral countries along with stronger stratification, altered sub-surface circulation and lower seawater pH is expected to result in large changes in biogeochemical cycling. In the past there have been several projects focusing on this region. The most notable being the International Indian Ocean expedition (IIOE) and the Joint Global Ocean flux studies (JGOFS), but these were mostly in the expedition mode with no particular emphasis on sustained measurements to observe long term trends/changes in parameters related to global change. Here, we briefly review some of the past projects such as the Indo-German collaborative project on sediment trap studies in the Indian Ocean and the ongoing time series study (Candolim Time Series; CaTS) off Goa. In addition, this article also focuses on the new time series initiative in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal under Sustained Indian Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research (SIBER)-India programme.
