Primary production and respiration rates were measured in 14 marine macroalgal species from the Goa coast. The highest production rate was observed in Hypnea musciformis and the lowest in Laurencia papillosa. Net production rates in these 14 species varied from 0.56 to 2.10gc/m2 of the algal surface area/day. Estimates based on the measured net production rates and standing stock of these algae from the Goa coast indicate an annual production of 726 tonnes of carbon
