Various methods are available for the determination of reference depth for geostrophic computation. A new method based on the vertical profiles of mean and variance of the differences of mean specific volume anomaly (delta x 10) for different layers of the water column for various pairs of stations is presented. The results agree well with published information for a region in the Indian Ocean
