Abstract: The scarcity of larval material in the IIOE collections, the faulty preservation which led to the mutilation and dismembering of parts of the specimens as well as nonavailability of connecting links between various stages have been serious handicaps in the preparation of a descriptive document on the larvae of flat fishes from the Indian Ocean. However, study of the larval forms from the Indian Ocean has been made possible due to the availability of material from the Naga Expedition (1959-61) from the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea, placed at the disposal of the present author through the good offices of Dr.E.H. Ahlstrom, from the collections maintained at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, U.S.A. Larvae of bothid flat fishes belonging to 9 genera and 24 species have been identified and described, of which 16 species are reported for the first time from the Indian Ocean. Attempts have also been made to correlate the environmental parameters and their influence on the distribution pattern of different species.
