Vijaydurg is situated on the bank of the river Vagthotan on the southern Konkan Coast of Maharashtra, India. It was a minor port in early historical period and lost its glory after the end of Satavahana rule in the region until it was absorbed into the empire of Shivaji. The marine archaeological explorations were conducted in Vijaydurg waters bringing to light a huge submerged structure, iron sling shots and pottery. Chinese ceramic ware and wooden logs of wrecked ships. The onshore exploration revealed a dockyard, several grapnel and triangular stone anchors in the adjoining area of dock and on the fortification wall of Vijaydurg fort. An attempt has been made here to describe different coastal and underwater structures of the port site, the methods of construction of structures and their use and history. The problems faced and technique adopted in locating underwater structures in high current zones with poor visibility are also recounted.
