Results are obtained using dimensional analysis to describe the characteristics of waste field at the marine outfall site off Bombay with a thrust on intermediate scale dispersion processes, which are of relevance to the assessment of the environmental impact of sea disposal operations. Estimations of the dilution availability of the receiving waters is made and the suitability of the location is assessed for an alternate moving source discharge to represent the specific scenario of failure of the existing point source discharge. Results of the componential currents showed the extent to which the bimodal current is induced by tides. Considering the physical behaviour, the coastal waters of this region were found to possess high instantaneous dilution capacity. It is also indicated that the waste would mix throughout depth more quickly and within 2 day of the waste spread over the disposal site, the dilution was predicted to be 9.3 x 10 sup(7) times dilution and would also be completely carried away so that significant build - up of waste in the region is unlikely
