dc.description.abstractMulti-temporal satellite imageries of 1997, 2001 and 2006, wave model results and field observations were used to evaluate effect of the grounded vessel MV River Princess. Erosion was triggered along the Candolim-Sinquerim shoreline due to this grounded vessel. The results suggest that the orientation and length of the vessel and more importantly the direction of the waves prevailing over the region, have prompted the grounded ship behave like an offshore breakwater. Based on satellite imageries, the extent of erosion along the shore line has been estimated to be 0.13 sq. km area in ~6 years. Direct impact of the vessel in eroding the southern coast is more explicit during the winter, pre-monsoon periods and SW monsoon, when the wave directions are conducive for sand bar formation on the lee side. The intensity of winds and higher significant wave height (Hs) during SW monsoon further deteriorates the shore front which has already become fragile due to severe erosion along beach front
