Effect of Petroleum Products on Mangrove Seedlings
Abstract
The effect of petrol, diesel and motor oil was studied on the fruits of Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia officinalis. The former species was found to be more resistant to these petroleum products than the latter, in which more toxic effect were seen. General damage in both the species were burning, yellowing and wilting of the leaves associated with root damage causing retardation of growth. Extensive leaf fall in Avicennia seedlings resulted in its mortality
