dc.description.abstractMicrofouling material developed on aluminium panels immersed in surface waters of the Dona Paula Bay, Goa India was analysed for biomass (measured as dry weight, organic crabon, protein and chlorophyll @ia@@) and electron transport system actitity (ETS). The ETS activity ranged from 720 to 1374 ~kg 0@d2@@ dm@u2@@ d@u-1@@. Microfouling biomass and ETS activity of microfouling material increased with the immersion period. ETS activity was significantly correlated with dry weight, organic carbon, protein and chl @ia@@. At low chl @ia@@ levels microheterotrophs play a major role in the overall respiration, however at high chl @ia@@ concentrations, microalgae can dominate respiration in a microfouling community
